Review of Cotton Comes to Harlem (1970) by Eric R — 12 Feb 2010
A tonally uneven adaptation of Chester Himesâ?? classic crime novel, Cotton Comes To Harlem still delivers some solid performances from its leads and a thrill or two from its dialogue heavy action sequences.
I really enjoy the â??Back To Africaâ?? scam at the center of the story and Calvin Lockhartâ??s corrupt reverend is pathetically villainous. I do wish the humor was toned down a bit (or completely removed) and that we had a straight up gritty crime drama, but there is still entertainment to be had here.
Solid, but not mind blowing. VF.
