Review of Coraline (2009) by Thomas P — 12 Nov 2012
Dark n glowy, always fascinating.
If you simply liked Nightmare Before Christmas, I think this will completely ignite you. Its a bit Amelie too..
I liked the characterizations here, and then the contrasts in the "other world".
A little nod to disturbing things, but kept back from being frightening.
Well played - not as frenetic or disturbing as parts of Nightmare.
Brilliant stop motion animation - its all in the details. I outgrew cartoons, but there is incredible sophistication here.
Good family story, Quirky, dark, odd, funny, always creative, a perfect mystery adventure for the kid in everyone.
Very small children may get overwhelmed by the creepy, but if you allow the story & the artistry to unfold, you will be pleasantly satisfied.
You have to be in the mood for a mystery.
The story holds your interest and.
Keeps you guessing all the way thru.
Wildly imaginative atmosphere.
It becomes even more fascinating w the director's commentary - to know the efforts taken to make this come to life. Quite amazing.
-I wrote this review during the 2nd viewing w/ director Selick's commentary, immediately after 1st viewing... Yes, its that good.. ;).
