Review of Coraline (2009) by Jenny B — 14 Dec 2012
This movie is both literally and figuratively magical. Dark enough to give you the creeps and yet not so dark that it isn't still good for the kiddies. And just enough of that fairy-like otherness with the portal to an otherworld that only she can see, and the haunting little things that only she would notice dropping hints towards its reality.
It does that thing that the most beloved Tim Burton films do where it shoves a moral or makes a statement plainly in your face without ever explicitly saying it. So many solid themes in this movie that it's not just for kids.
Appreciate what you have, nothing's perfect, if it's too good to be true it probably is, selfish possessiveness will only drive others away and make you more lonely, the grass is always greener, and of course weird neighbors often turn out to be nice people.
Can't forget that one. ;).
