Review of Coraline (2009) by Humberto O — 20 Feb 2014
This is stop-motion at its best, and sometimes you won't believe that this isn't just CG. It's amazingly well done, and the story and characters are incredible too. This is not something too scary or with a design too eccentric or that should be kept away from small children; in fact, this movie has a strange appeal to them, and the story is something that maybe children would actually benefit from.
The voice acting is very good too. Well worth watching more than once. Just don't fall for the 3D trap: this movie was made in 2D, and the 3D version is a conversion (a very ordinary one, by the way).
3D is already something that has an aura of unreliability and that not only needs to be VERY well made, but also that needs to be made in real 3D to have any viewing value, with 2 viewpoints recorded (from live actors and scenarios) or rendered (in case of CG).
Conversions are the worst thing created in this area, without a doubt, but unfortunately much cheaper than real 3D.
