Review of Cop Out (2010) by Andrew D — 26 Aug 2011
Kevin Smith tries to tread outside the Jay & Silent Bob universe, and shows that he really wants to be back there.
On many levels, the movie is a bit schizophrenic. There are touches to the humour, and mentions of several sexual practices, that are pure Kevin Smith. (He even gets Bruce Willis doing immature dick jokes). For the most part though, it tries to be an 80's buddy-cop movie in the present day, and doesn't work.
Willis is bored and listless as Jimmy, while Tracy Morgan's Paul is over the top to the point of ridicule. Seann William Scott is the best thing in the movie, but his role is fleeting. Jason Lee is obviously there only because he's Kevin Smith's mate (Jason Mewes and Ben Affleck were lined up to cameo, but couldn't). Michelle Trachtenberg is the eye-candy, but is rarely seen expcept to book-end the movie. And combined with the incompetent cops alongside them, and Jimmy's relentless bitch of an ex-wife, the movie goes beyond parody .Even Harold Faltermayer's score sounds like he'd parodying his earlier work.
There are some funny moments (mostly provided by Scott), but Smith should just get back to Jay, Bob, and Buddy Christ.
