Review of Cop Out (2010) by Jeremy J — 13 Feb 2012
Okay the movie was cliche I'll just lead with that, but I didn't feel this was a movie trying to reinvent the buddy cop franchise, but rather a movie paying homage to the great buddy cop movies like Lethal Weapon.
I wasn't sure what to expect but it was time well spent. I laughed throughout the movie, great humor throughout. I felt like Morgan and Willis had great scream chemistry. And the addition of Stifler (I just can't see him as anyone but Stifler) was a great choice, the scene where they pick him up and drive with him in the squad car had me laughing all the way.
Kevin Smith is a wonderful and diverse director and what I love about him is his love of all the old genre films and his ability to pay tribute to them but still bring something new to the platform. For those wondering, Smith also has a flare for the ummmm... Inappropriate? This movie was very subdued in that respect. I didn't feel that any of the humor crossed the line, but it definitely had his mark on it.
Bottom line... I'm a HUGE fan of movies like Lethal Weapon, Beverly Hills Cop, etc... And I watching this took me back to those days and the fun I had watching them. I think this goes down as one of the greats.
