Review of Cop Out (2010) by Chris R — 31 Mar 2013
You learn pretty fast from watching Cop Out that Tracy Morgan has vocal issues as an actor, and he embodies the stereotype of every black buddy cop ever made combined. And yet, it's awesome because his over the top line delivery is fairly funny and when he's matched with a self-satirising Bruce Willis, they make a good team.
The factual thing about Cop Out is that it's more-or-less a comedic parody of the buddy cop genre, and who better to direct it than Kevin Smith? Kevin Smith is a man good at directing simple chill comedy films, and he makes a foray of that skill into action-comedy with Cop Out, and although it's been unpopular with critics, the right viewer is likely to enjoy it for it's simple minded stupidity and humour. Luckily for me, I'm one of those viewers.
It's not hard to see where Cop Out gets its criticisms though, because its dynamics are in creative and repetitive, and the scene where Tracy Morgan interrogates his first guy is funny in a certain painful way.
Also, certain plot dynamics are too brief and seemingly pointless to the overall story.
But Cop Out is stupid, funny and clearly had inspiration drawn from Tango and Cash as you can identify from the nostalgic musical score.
And as well as the awesome 2 leads, the participation of Sean William Scott is hilarious in his brief time on screen despite being too limited in the short period of time.
So Cop Out us a lot more comedy than action, and may be a fairly stupid to many viewers, but I find that in this case it was funny and that the leads were a good team.
