Review of Cop Land (1997) by Beau J — 25 Mar 2010
A hackneyed movie about crooked cops is saved by a stellar performance from Sylvester Stallone, who outshone the rest of the cast, including the great De Niro, playing a meek town sheriff who slowly realizes the true extent of the corruption running through his town, which is populated mainly by NY city cops.
Watching Stallone in this flick you wonder why we don't see more performances like this from him. OK, I know why, because being a one-dimensional action hero paid better, but dammit, his subdued performance in Cop Land makes me wish he'd leave those stupid stock roles behind and tap into that potential he displayed oh-so-long ago in the first Rocky movie before that character became a running joke.
Hopefully as Stallone ages (he's now into his sixties) he'll finally leave those stupid action flicks behind and delve into roles that displays the talent that once upon a time in the late 1970s had him favorably compared to a young Brando. Stallone is a talented actor...when he wants to be.
