Review of Cop Land (1997) by Aurelius D — 25 Jun 2009
Ok so I finally caught this because of the might DVR and record. It helps when there isn't anything on because the seasons are on break. Having finally watched for the first time tonight I'm like wow how did I miss this? My first thought was "could they get any more stars" and I really don't think so.
It's like they cleared the bench of everyone not doing something in 97 and gave them a part in the movie. My second thought, of course, would be how many people they got that did mob related things.
I mean you got the better portion of a Goodfella's/ Soprano's casting. Of course all this takes a back seat as they are all cop related this time. You got Sly being the typical quiet guy with the "inner Rambo" waiting to be called into action.
He plays a Sheriff of a town that seems to be solely populated by police that work in New York, except Sly's town is on the Jersey side. The cops get away with everything because Sly is a little slow/half deaf and it's obvious how he got the job.
You got your common elements of pushing him too far before his moral compass finally finds "north" and then it's on like Donkey Kong. Definitely worth a watch for the star power alone, even more interesting to watch how the cops operate with such impunity you would think they were the brass and not just lowly civil servants half a step away from writing speeding tickets.
