Review of Cop Car (2015) by Alasdair B — 26 Aug 2015
Not long ago, I saw the trailer for this film and immediately wanted to see it. So many cop thrillers have been made that its rare we get one this fresh and inventive. It's been a while since I've seen a suspenseful film such as this. "Cop Car" is directed by Jon Watts and stars Kevin Bacon and Shea Whigham.
Travis and Harrison are two mischievous youngsters who've run away from home. As they trek across the fields, the two boys happen across an abandoned cop car. They hesitantly approach, finding that the car is indeed empty. Unable to qualm their curiosity, the boy climb into the car and drive away. As they plow through metal gates and speed down the road at high speeds, they are unaware of the trouble that lies in wait for them. Sheriff Kretzer (Bacon) arrives at the clearing where his car once rested. In a panic, Kretzer begins his journey to get back his cop car.
Kevin Bacon is one of those actors who can do just about anything. He's a skilled actor, and this is a perfect role for him. This isn't a film that focuses on character development, so Bacon's character isn't particularly deep, but his performance is undoubtedly brilliant. Next to Bacon, the film doesn't really have any other characters aside from the two children. This film really understands the nature of children. The boys feel incredibly real and authentic. I can't stand films in which kids are depicted as goodie-goodies. These kids swear, they're loud, and they are very thoughtful. One of the highlights of the film were the children trying to keep their humanity. There was a scene when one of the boys has a choice to make; whether or not to take a life.
This is one of the most suspenseful films I've seen all year. Not only was it a joy to watch, it was a frightening experience. There are several moments in the film where I was literally on edge. Director Jon Watts is a brilliant director, and shows his capabilities. He directs each scene with incredible talent, and gives the film a harsh, dark, and tense feeling. Despite all this, it must be noted that the script does fall short. The story and characters don't really grip you like they need to. However, this doesn't bring the film down much at all. This film feels very much like a Coen brother's picture. It's got that grim kind of humor feel to it, while also containing underlining themes of morality.
"Cop Car" may fall short in some areas, but in the end it's one of the best independent films I've seen in some time. Kevin Bacon gives a mesmerizing performance, and the child actors do a grand job as well. The cinematography is absolutely stunning, and reminds me very much of Roger Deakins work. If you love the Coen brothers, and specifically they're film, No Country For Old Men, you'll enjoy this movie. It's one of the most suspenseful films I've seen so far this year.
