Review of Cooties (2014) by Tracy W — 19 Sep 2015
A funny premise turns into a bad one note joke and goes no where in this satirical Zombie flick. The director wants his comedy and his wants his scary zombies too, he barely gets the first one and never achieves the second one.
The film in the beginning wants to use zombie children as a social commentary on the state of American public schools and while it's doing that the film works but very quickly it goes into normal zombie tropes area and becomes a large bore fest with over the top gore and lame dialogue.
The films first problem are the zombies themselves. Apparently the virus only effects children before puberty now this could have been interesting and even could have been a little scary. I mean there's all kinds of implications in a scenario like that.
I mean, thats an automatic end of the human race right there, but the film has no time for conversations like this. It just has kids covered in fake blood running around the school making scary sounds and eating people.
Some characters are soo poorly introduced that I don't even know their names. Some of the best scenes are at the beginning of the film so I suppose the movie just climaxed way to early. Either way, the film isn't completely dismissable.
I didn't hate it, just it was run of the mill, if it was a made for tv movie then perhaps it would have been acceptable but for a wide release this film should have been and could have been something fun, gory and maybe even something special.
2/5 stars.
