Review of Cooties (2014) by Mark S — 12 Oct 2015
Plain and simple, Cooties is a fun movie. A grindhouse movie. If you go in with those admittedly low expectations, you should have fun with it. I could criticize the movie for its lack of any sort of resolution (the film never really ends, it just kind of stops), it's plot threads and characters that lead absolutely nowhere, or it's sometimes awkward attempts at comedy, but I almost feel like that would be missing the point of a movie like this.
I feel like the creators of this movie had a series of ideas, scenes, and set pieces, and sort of just threw them together without any attempts at a cohesive plot to bring them together. There's an overall series of events and cast of characters that we follow throughout, but there's no solid arc. And yet I can't really be mad at the movie for that. I had fun with it. I had fun watching the teacher's genuine reactions to an effed up situation, I had fun watching the janitor go full samurai of a group of infected elementary schoolers, and I had fun with the big crazy set pieces they put these characters in.
Cooties is like a roller coaster ride: it's pretty short, there's not a whole lot to it, and you don't gain any profound insights from the experience, and looking back on it you may wonder what the big deal was; but while you're on the ride it's an undeniably enjoyable experience.
