Review of Cooley High (1975) by Curtis R — 21 Apr 2008
Cooley High is often called the "Black American Graffiti" but I think it stands on its own as an equal if not slightly better film than the George Lucas classic. This comedy-drama set in 1960's Chicago chronicles the life of high school buddies Preach and Cochise trying to survive in Chicago's inner city projects.
Preach is a talented writer and Cochise a rising basketball star who want to use their talents to get them out of their dangerous neighborhood. The film starts out lightheartedly as a nostalgic coming of age film set to a great Motown soundtrack.
The film's end turns surpisingly tragic for both friends however showing that real life isnt like a "Happy Days" episode. This film was the basis for the classic sitcom "What's Happening?" You can see alot of the character Raj being formed by the Preach character in this film complete with a tattletale little sister(Dee).
A great film.
