Review of Cool World (1992) by Joe G — 22 Sep 2010
What started out as an intriguing work of imaginative art, turned into an animated nightmare, and not the good kind. We get to know our characters rather well, and it looks like we are in for a plot, and we brace ourselves for it to arrive. Suddenly, we're more than an hour in and there is still no trace of a story. Instead we are fed useless, slopped-together images of something that looked like Ralph Steadman puked on the paper and decided to keep it.
It is, indeed, obvious to see that the actors had nothing to work with. Their movements looked so choreographed, and so stiff. Not only that, the switch between an animated background and a real-life set was so easy to point out. Even Roger Rabbit did a more convincing job than this movie, and while not perfect, Roger Rabbit will still be remembered by at least a cult following. Cool World, on the other hand, will only be remembered through the actors' filmographies.
The only nice thing that can be said about this movie is that it had imagination, it just didn't have the gusto to pull it off.
