Review of Cool Hand Luke (1967) by Jason F — 14 Apr 2009
This is one of the most memorable and incredible performances by an actor I've ever seen. Paul Newman makes it look easy as he immerses himself in Luke's wayward persona. His charm captivates while his underlying melancholy evokes sympathy for Luke's plight in the chain gang and in his faith.
There are numerous charismatic and defiant moments that standout (the boxing scene, the paving scene, the egg scene) but one of the most powerful scenes is Luke's subdued lament as he mourns his mother's death.
Artistically, it's a poetic moment as we watch Luke shed tears, voice slightly cracking, as he fingers the banjo. From a trade standpoint, it is a technical and personal feat for Newman to perform so genuinely and affectingly.
