It's all about the cheeky smile. Sometimes we go beyond sympathising with a character. Here we want to be Luke's friend. Here we feel like we are Luke's friend. Also, a minor bit of trivia: the soundtrack during the road gang tar application was stolen for news services in the USA and subsequently used by Channel 9 in Australia.
When watching Cool Hand Luke for the first time it jumped out at me as quite an astonishing moment. Some research confirmed this was the case. Perhaps it's just my interest in irrelevant trivia that makes this so interesting.
