Review of Cool Hand Luke (1967) by Alysia V — 19 May 2009
Though I found this 2 hour and 6 minute film to drag on quite a bit, I can certainly see why it's been deemed a classic. I've not seen many of Paul Newman's older films, but he definitely impressed me in this one.
It's basically a one man show & he carries it oh so confidently. I love this his character, Luke, never conformed & never gave in. He never allowed his spirit to be broken by the confinement of prison & the cruelty of the guards.
Though his body was in prison, his mind & spirit were not & he just took every hardship with a cheeky grin & that twinkle in his beautifiul eyes. And I loved that about his character. His "ain't nothin' gunna bring me down" sort of vibe.
He was just...cool. A classic character, most certainly.
