Review of Cool Hand Luke (1967) by Rod A — 06 Jun 2009
Newman is a friendly guy, of that there's no denial. He's never going to succumb to the abuse of "the man." Not taking anything away from Newman's on-screen magnetism, this film seems a bit forced.
True, it's made with an underlying tone of rebelliousness that all American heroes possess, yet when one looks at Bresson's A Man Escaped, the same drive to be free is displayed with more grit and realism.
It's a stylistic choice of course. I've grown less tolerant of Hollywood sentimentalism.
