Excellent meditation on the lostness of man and the supposedly empty promise of salvation, yet replete with cruciform images and hints at God's presence through the inability to subdue human dignity.
Faithful adaptation of the novel, rife with irony and wit, a timeless cinema classic. Arguably Newman's finest portrayal of that time.
