Review of Cool Hand Luke (1967) by Mats V — 02 Jul 2010
In my opinion, Paul Newman's best movie and one of the best stories ever. Not really a movie, but a commentary on man's relationship with his God and how he chooses to keep living and fighting even though we know we're all doomed to die eventually.
The underlying moral of this film is that of a caged bird. You may keep a bird locked up for long periods of time, perhaps even for life, but in the end we (i.e. our spirits) are always going to be free.
A film that includes some jaw-droppingly awesome acting, especially from George Kennedy, who won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as Dragline. The film also includes some fantastic supporting roles by other legendary actors (who weren't necessarily famous when this was filmed) including Dennis Hopper, Harry Dean Stanton, Lou Antonio, Robert Drivas and Strother Martin, who perhaps delivers the greatest movie quote in the history of memorable movie quotes; "What we've got here.
..is a failure...to communicate" An iconic classic that's both moving, fun and highly intelligent.
