Review of Cool Hand Luke (1967) by John E — 01 Jan 2011
A nicely done film featuring what is likely Paul Newman's most solid performance. It boasts a strong ensemble cast full of likable characters who make the best out of the trials of living in a chain gang.
Newman's easy charm and inexplicable, yet hypnotizing tenacity are fascinating; he never lets the Man put him down, no matter what the threat or guise (the Captain, No Eyes) and his random determination is awe-inspiring.
It's a unique film in every sense of the word from the characterization to the story down to the inspired direction boasting some of the finest camerawork I've yet seen. For my money, it hasn't aged a day.
