Excellent tale about the spirit of resistance, embodied by one mans struggle to retain his sense of freedom and live in the moment, in the face of oppression and control from the justice system, the sadistic cruelty of the prison guards, the expectations of his fellow inmates, and the rules of a god he doesn't believe in.
Newman's character brings a huge sense of fun & indomitability to an otherwise dark situation, and the film is akin to such greats as One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and The Shawshank Redemption.
It's also peppered with some great American folk songs by the likes of Woody Guthrie, which illustrate the same spirit of rebellion & freedom.
