There is no failure to communicate with the audience: Paul Newman possesses the power to make a movie a masterpiece with his presence alone. Stuart Rosenberg stunts the picture with his dull direction, but Newman and the supporting cast lift it from what would have been the bottom of the pile to one of the best prison movies made.
