Review of Cool Hand Luke (1967) by Charles H — 23 Nov 2013
One of my all-time favorite films and a cinematic masterpiece, Cool Hand Luke explores themes of non-conformity and unjust oppression in a quasi-religious tone, as the titular "Cool Hand" Luke Jackson preaches his gospel to his fellow inmates in a Florida labor prison.
Supporting the extraordinary plot are the abounding excellent performances, with Paul Newman as the crazy handful of nothing Luke, George Kennedy in his oscar-winning role of redneck tough guy Dragline, and Strother Martin as the severley quotable prison captain.
I would recommend this movie to anyone willing to take a thrilling, emotional, and thematic two hour and six minute journey with a chain-gang who finds a savior in a "natural born world-shaker".
Cool Hand Luke blends a moving story, endearing characters, and a profound message, and contains an ending sequence which I believe to be one of the greatest in cinematic history. Even "The Man With No Eyes" should see this movie!
