Review of Cool Hand Luke (1967) by Braden S — 22 Mar 2010
Cool Hand Luke is about as perfect as a film can get, most films only dream of reaching the mastery of this movie. The only thing holding it back is the somewhat odd directorial choices that Rosenburg uses.
Other than that it is a perfect movie. Paul Newman shines on the screen and gives not only the "coolest" but one of the best performances ever filmed. The realism of the movie is at top form thanks to the amazing supporting acting jobs.
George Kennedy is at his best in his Oscar winning portrayal of Dragline. Considered more of a drama, I was really surprised at how funny the movie is. Containing one of my favorite comedic scenes: A sexy girl is provocatively washing her car in front of all the convicts, who haven't been around or seen women in months and years.
I was laughing so hard when Dragline calls her Lucille and states, "Anything so innocent and built like that just gotta be named Lucille." Overall this is easily in my top ten of favorite movies and its a can't miss if your a fan of Newman, brilliant screenwriting or just amazing acting.
