When the stubborn non conformist Luke Jackson (Paul Newman) gets arrested for destroying municipal property while drunk, he gets locked up with a chain gang. Through a series of events, Luke eventually decides to escape.
.which he does successfully several times. But this causes him to lock horns with the cold authoritarian warden (Strother Martin). As the two get locked in a battle of wills, the captain is determined to break Luke's spirit no matter what.
This is one of Paul Newman's best films, a timeless classic.
