Review of Coogan's Bluff (1968) by Tony P — 11 May 2008
This is one the dopiest action-comedies I've ever seen. Eastwood is cool and all, I love the guy, his character is great... but the story is so muddled with sex that it's ridiculous. If they could have laid off the womanizing element of his character and just stuck to the fish-out-of-water story, all would be right.
The fight scenes would be pretty riveting if it weren't for the absurdly overdone sound design of people groaning and whimpering whenever they're hitting someone or being hit. Watch it, you'll see what I'm talking about.
Then there's a hippie party scene that's completely out of place and way too long, but it's sort of awesome in an exploitation kind of way. This film really marks the segway between Eastwood's western genre and action/cop genre, and reflects both them in a pretty cool way.
But overall, it's a silly movie.
