Review of Conviction (2010) by David S — 15 Feb 2012
It's very well made, the script is very strong. The acting is some of the most up and down I've seen. Towards the beginning of the film, I was greatly enjoying Hilary Swank (probably the first time I've ever said that), but as it went on, it just became annoying, and I couldn't concentrate anymore.
If it wasn't for Minnie Driver and a very down to earth Sam Rockwell, I couldn't have handled "Conviction" at all. However, the director uses the actors well, allowing them to find emotion, and play the moments.
This is one redeeming feature. I was convinced that this could be a real good 'un, with strong character acting, well-worded script, but it just seemed dull at times, like it was cutting at a block of wood.
I couldn't feel what I thought I should feel, and I didn't get the rush I should have done at the moment of freedom. It just wasn't there, and for all the time spent on the screenplay, it should have been better.
