Review of Control (2013) by Hanna K — 19 Sep 2008
Ok, for the record, I went into this movie without knowing anything about Joy Division or the lead singer Ian Curtis. I knew the "Love Will Tear Us Apart" song pretty well, but that was pretty much it... I watched it because the band "the Killers" did a cover of the Joy Division song "ShadowPlay", and in their video, they used clips from the movie "Control", and it looked interesting...
And this was an awesome movie... I gained a new appreciation for Joy Division, and Ian Curtis - even picked up their "best of" cd...
Rock movies scare me in that they can get a little pretentious (see the recent Bob Dylan movie for an example), confusing (see Pink Floyd's "the Wall"), or absolutely great (see "Out of Our Dens - the RYL story" -- LOL with the people who get that reference ).
But "Control" was great - a clear bio with just enough music mixed in there to get the Joy Division bug..
I dont think any of the actors in the movie were famous before this, but they should be... Played the parts very well, and when I watched the real Joy Division video on the DVD, the band really looked like the actors from the 1970's.
If you're looking for a good rock bio, this is it...
Hopefully the new Darby Crash/Germs movie will be just as good!
