Review of Control (2007) by Ricardo V — 28 Nov 2008
There are many films that have tapped into the rock-biopic genre, many have worked like walk the line, 24 hour party people, but others have fallen to the waste side such as the doors, i'm not there and ray to a lesser degree.
now here is a film that is about the troubled, very young singer of joy division ian curtis and it's shot in beautiful black and white. it is simply a wonderful piece of photography, this I believe is the director's first film and it is wonderful to look at.
the music sticks into u're head and with the back stage access into curtis's life, these songs take on added resonance. the performance by the lead actor is simply pitch perfect, he completely envelopes the role and shows a man torn completely to shreds by two women he cannot live without, but cannot go on without hurting.
also, samantha morton is in the film playing curtis's wife and as with all her performances, she remains one of my favorite actresses with a sense of humility that is rare. I love this film.
