Review of Control (2004) by Sofia T — 22 Oct 2008
It has that lovely Corbijn grittiness to it, but suffers when compared to other JD biopics like 24 Hour Party People or Joy Division (2008). Despite being based on Debiie Curtis' book, there isn't all that much exploration of Ian's motivations and relationships. It becomes yet another biopic. The relation of the author to the subject is also something to keep in the back of one's head, although Tony Wilson's production credit suggests the opportunity for balance.
It's a good movie, but should be paired with similar works to get a better picture or the _real_ story, that of 80s Manchester. I will admit that the similaries of actors to their principals are stellar and that I could not tell what songs were JD cuts and which ones were modern recreations.
