Review of Control (2004) by Mykee M — 30 Nov 2008
See this movie. The general public must become aware of the sheer genius and art of Joy Division and the legendary Ian Curtis.
Sam Riley nails it right on the head as Ian Curtis. Though not a vocal match per say, he really got Ian's mannerisms and facial expressions down pat. He even coincidentally looks like Ian, which really helps sell the reality of the events.
Screw all those other rock band movies, this is the one that needs to be seen. It's message and heart is so true, and Ian so tragic, it just needs to be witnessed. Other films have tried to tackle the isolation and despair one with mental conditions suffer, but this one really makes you feel. It really brings you to Ian's level, and into his eyes. As if I didn't already love and cherish Joy Division's music...this film showed me some of what fueled the lyrics of their songs, and what went on behind the music I enjoy so much. Songs like Control and Isolation take on a new meaning, far deeper than I had previously thought.
This is one of the few films that actually made me cry. Still to this day I can not listen to Joy Division's last recordings without tearing up. Because I feel his pain that went into those songs.
