Review of Control (2004) by Borough B — 01 Jun 2009
Because of my deep fondness for the band, I knew it would be impossible for me to give an objective rating of this pic. Nevertheless I will sum up a few reasons why this is a great movie, regardless whether one likes JD or not.
From a cinematographic point of view, Corbijn made an excellent choice converting it into a black and white movie; it isn't only artistic, it enhances the greyness and darkness of the period, place and mood as well.
Every great movie has got a great soundtrack. Once again, music taste is subjective, but the acoustics are really absorbing, making you feel as if you were part of the scene. Respect for the actors for playing and singing most of the songs themselves.
Casting: Strong performances by these relatively unknown actors. There's no standard of comparison since there's so little footage on Curtis and co, but I trust it to be very realistic, given that Ian's widow was the co-producer. Riley did an excellent job on portraying Curtis' mannerisms, which must have been a very hard thing to do.
Story-wise: Sadly enough, tragic stories make great movies. In all its simplicity, it unleashed a great deal of sentiments, with the expulsion of the black smoke at the crematorium as the summum.
Conclusion: A must see for anyone who likes biopics, music, artistic movies and obviously Joy Division.
