Review of Control (2004) by Brad H — 31 Jul 2009
Can't see what all the fuss is about. The performances are so-so, the photography is bland and the script adopts a whistle-stop approach to the material without the slightest regard to the passage of time.
Riley's portrayal does nothing but look miserable and pissed off, so there's no sense of a life worth living, much less losing. There's more depth to Curtis than this film bothers with, so showing us all of his angst but no enjoyment in his loves or music cripples any emotional underplay that might be worth mining.
