Review of Control (2004) by Donald S — 28 Jun 2011
Control is a compelling biography showing the sad and enigmatic life of Ian Curtis. Using the real location of the singer's Manchester flat and actors who actually perform the music of Joy Division, the film bleeds credibility.
Many shots are set as still black and whites slowly panning along roof peaks and streetscapes allowing one to absorb not only the scenery, but the overall tone of the film. The public life of Curtis portrayed by Sam Riley is shown as one soaring to stardom while his irreconcilable personal life inhibits the full realization of his artistic merits.
