Review of Control (2004) by Andrew B — 15 Jun 2012
Even if you're not the biggest of Joy Division fans, this is an excellent biopic.
Sam Riley is close to amazing as Ian Curtis and Samantha Morton gives him a good run for his money as his neglected wife. The film is expertly shot in an almost documentary style, only added to by it's black and white presentation.
Aside from Riley and Morton the whole cast are excellent and back up by an absolutely cracking soundtrack.
The film is truly moving and in contrast to the piss poor 24 hour Party people where Curtis was presented as a comical idiot, he is shown here as a tortured soul, his epilepsy as much a casue for his depression as anything else.
Control is deeply emotional film, the deifnitive portrayal of the story of one of the 70s most influential musicians.
