Review of Contempt (1963) by Cassidy H — 08 Oct 2007
Yeah, thats right, I gave it one star. I dont care if it is Goddard. I WILL take him down. Thats just how I roll.
Everything about this film lacks subtlety and nuance, not just the repetitive and intrusive score. Case in point- main characters wander into striking composition, girl in yellow dress against red wall. Then Fritz Lang fucks it up by saying some shite like "thats a lovely shade of yellow". Is Goddard so insecure ppl won't notice his colour schemes that he has to have his characters, who are already thematic ciphers, mouth inane dialogue in order to point it out?
Anytime I thought I picked up subtle messages about the motivations of the characters, they wrecked it by having the characters then spell it out in full detail with some expository dialogue in the next scene. Which would probably annoy me more if I gave a shit about or was at least interested in the characters. And then the film ends with a (clearly fake, the car isnt even dented) car crash, right up there with "it was all just a dream" and omg, it was my doppleganger chasing me this whole time, in terms of lame cop-out endings.
