Review of Contempt (1963) by Lee B — 26 Feb 2008
Although I do have repect for him as an artist and film maker, I'm not a huge fan of Godard, and this film is doesn't help. I feel it is too personal, being an exploration both into his the end of his marriage to Anna Karina and his constant battle with film studios to pander to the general public.
The problem becomes that the relationships in the film - which is what it revolves around -are never believable. I never believe that either of them were ever that in love with each other and therefore I can't feel much about the decline of their marriage aside from the ugliness of its demise.
Despite that, it is a technically and artistically sound film with unique shots and clever, symbolic moments and shouldn't be completely dismissed - it is still a good film, just not as great as it could have been.
