Review of Contempt (1963) by Ivan D — 28 Aug 2010
Playwright Paul Javal takes on a screenwriting job - adapting Ulysses for producer Jeremy Prokosch (Jack Palance). It's not clear whether Paul is deliberately using his wife Camille (Brigitte Bardot) as leverage, but the possibility soon destroys their relationship nonetheless.
All seem resigned to their fate in this dispiriting take on the movie-making process: marriages, individuals come and go - only film moves on. An indictment or expression of self-loathing? Striking widescreen photography and Godard's unique form of storytelling are some of the highlights here.
