Review of Contact (1997) by Derek B — 01 Apr 2016

This is not a movie to watch if you want mind-numbing special effects or non-stop action. This film embodies, for me, what good science fiction should be. It makes you wonder "What If?", and makes you think.

Does it have its excitement? Sure, in its way. This is more of a thought experiment, the way I see it. Foster is good, maybe a bit too emotional at times, and the other actors play their parts well. I think we can all relate to dislike David Drumlin, the self-absorbed glory hound of the film.

Overall, a four. Not what I would call great, for a few reasons. The cinematography and score are both a bit lacking for my taste, but the story itself does a wonderful job of compensating for what the film is missing.

If you haven't seen it, I think it's worth the time if you're interested in astronomy at all.
