Review of Contact (1997) by Shane D — 30 Apr 2011
Never has a film excited me so much and simultaneously been so flawed. The parts of this film that delve into the reception of a message from space, the understanding of that message and the path followed to communicate with another alien species, totally enthralled me.
The parts featuring Matthew McConaughey didn't. Put simply, there are parts of this film which make it a candidate for my favourite sci-fi of all time, then there are parts which qualify for the opposite.
Its a strange contradiction. The science VS religion aspect is an interesting one, even if it is handled unevenly throughout. The "Wizard-Of-Oz" ending is also a disappointing one. That being said, there are moments throughout that elicit a strong interest so as a result, its a film I am happy to revisit.
