Review of Contact (1997) by Sebastian E — 28 Apr 2010
Perhaps one of the best aspects of this film (aside from the plot) is the scientific realism. In this it is faithful to Carl Sagan's original book, on which the film is based. For those not aware, Carl Sagan was an astronomer responsible for the popularisation of the subject through his 1980 television series Cosmos. Many of the lines seem to be direct quotes from Sagan's celestial liturgy, such as the formula for extraterrestrial life, the nature of belief/faith and the assumption that any alien civilization would, in all likelyhood, have destroyed itself long before they were able to make significant advances in extraterrestrial communication.
Don't watch this film if you have a short attention span or no appetite for science. Idiots won't enjoy this film.
