Review of Constantine (2005) by Roderick D — 16 May 2011
A Brilliant Spectacle. Francis Lawrene brings what could have been an ordinary demon-hunter debacle into a marvelous amalgam of visual splendour, intriguing characters and dynamic camera-work. Keanu's lack of acting chops aside, this is one of the finest films of its year.
Brilliantly shot, and acted (by everyone else except Keanu), this film a visual feast, and not just because of the visual effects, but because of the vision of its director. Peter Stormare, Gavin Rosdale , Djimon Hounsou, and Tilda Swinton all give great performances in characters-types we've seen before, but somehow they seem fresh in this film.
I cannot speak enough on how well Francis Lawrence has delivered on this his directorial debut. He definitely has an eye the big screen, after his many years of doing music videos. The balance has been tipped in tremendous favour of this film.
