Review of Constantine (2005) by Man With N — 24 Aug 2013
Constantine is a movie that I didn't know what to expect going in to. I expected it to have a lot of action and scares. Instead it takes its time and sucks you into the stylized world where it's self aware of how potentially silly it can get and sort of makes fun of itself. Reeves fits his part this time playing John Constantine who is an expert at sending people back to hell. Obviously, shit hits the fan so we can get our movie.
I love the mythology of this movie. It uses people like Gabriel and Satan and uses them sparingly so they have an impact when they come on screen. Hell looks amazing. It's like a post apocalyptic version of our world and the cinematography in those scenes is great.
The action, when it is actually used, is really good. The special effects are, again, used sparingly and are great when it is used.
It's a really effective movie that I think is certainly underrated and definitely not worth comparing to The Matrix(fucking consensus crew). It gets an 8/10 but a strong 8/10. It's effective and recommendable to people want a superhero movie with good action and great mythology to make great popcorn movie in a good way.
