Review of Conspiracy Theory (1997) by David A — 20 Apr 2010
(from The Watermark, 08/17/97).
Gibson is a paranoid New York cab driver, whose crackpot theories of international conspiracy may not be too far off the mark. After being kidnapped and tortured, he turns to justice worker Roberts for help in uncovering which of his hypotheses might have hit a nerve. Gibson's penchant for playing psychos is elevated to a new level as his character struggles to regain his sanity. The story is engaging, the action is well-filmed, and Roberts is her ever-affable self. Whereas there isn't anything particularly bad about the film, it doesn't quite possess anything that distinguishes it either. It's good. Most people will probably like it. So see it already.
