Review of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) by Gabriel A — 11 Jul 2017
By the far the darkest film of the series unfortunately, it's the also the cheapest looking. Outside of a few main apes, the ape masks on the hundreds of servant apes are just cheap Halloween masks making it hard to disappear into the world of the apes as we once did.
What keeps this movie intriguing is the return of Ricardo Montalbon, the relevancy of the story, and the award worthy performance of Roddy McDowell whom after portraying Cornelius in the 2 of the first 3 films now plays his son Milo/Caesar.
Born Milo at the end of Escape, when given the opportunity to choose his name he picks Caesar, "A king?!" His master and nemesis Breck exclaims in testy manner. Filmed with two endings, one hopeful and one incredibly bleak.
At least if you're a human.
