Review of Connie and Carla (2004) by Nathan K — 22 Apr 2004
What would you do if you wittnessed a murder and were completely innocent? Run off to L.A. and hide out as a drag queen? Even if you were a chick?.

Ok, I know I can't knock the premise, it doesn't really matter anyway. Connie and Carla was a fun romp, and Nia Vardalos proved again that she's pretty funny..

This script wasn't as succesful as her previous (My Big Fat...), but it did have its moments. I think what mattered the most was that the actors were having fun, and you could tell. Oh yea, I love Toni Collette, but she is one ugly drag queen, but shit can she (and Nia) sing. If you count belting as singing. (give me Renne Flemming any day).
.
Now what's up with gay men not laughing a the gay jokes? Being a gay man, I felt a little uncomfortable laughing out loud at the gay jokes and hearing almost no one else in the theatre joining in. I would gues that more than half of the men in the theatre were gay as well. (saw the film at the Landmark Century, on clark St in Chicago, just blocks south of "boyztown") it was weird, what a bunch of tightasses (pun!).
.
I just hope there is no sequel..
Laugh on,.
Airfigaro.
