Review of Confessions of a Shopaholic (2009) by Silvia O — 18 Mar 2010
I can't believe I ended up seeing it. Ah, what would you not put up with just for the joy of having someone to whisper to right next to you?
Even by blockbuster standards, I thought this movie was below average. To begin with, the heroine is not al that likeable, so that's already a bad start. Then, as the movie goes by, it just accumulates stupid moments and unrealistic plot developments. There are quite a few genuinely funny moments, but they are drowned in the sea of sheer silliness that surrounds them.
The actors? They were all right. I mean, you would have to be really bad to screw up a role where all you have to do is just be pretty and flutter your eyelashes most of the time. No, seriously, they were quite all right, independently of the movie itself. Surprisingly, the only actor of the cast that really disappointed me was Kristin Scott Thomas. She just seemed like a bland wanna-be Meryl Streep in "The Devil Wears Prada". In fact, I the whole movie had such a sense of deja vu about it that it just comes out as a blend of "Definitely, Maybe" and "The Devil Wears Prada" with a touch of "Sex and the City" (I'm talking about the horribly obnoxious clothes here). And, you may have guessed it, the grand result comes out as a lot less that any of its components.
