Review of Confessions of a Shopaholic (2009) by Kaye H — 31 Aug 2010
This is a fun film that you could kick back and enjoy with friends. Having just read the books, however, they were very fresh in my mind and I was often distracted by the many changes made to the story.
First of all, Becky Bloomwood is supposed to be British, and the film itself is meant to be set in England. I don't think it translated as well to an American setting. Some of the story's charm, as well as the quirky personality traits that Becky has in the books are just British in nature.
Isla Fisher is fantastic, and I did enjoy her portrayal, but she could have still been cast as Becky if the film were done in the UK. It would be hard for the producers to make a sequel, as they've kind of blended the ideas and concepts from several of the books.
Overall, I'd say you'll like it better if you haven't read the books. The books are definitely much better than the film (uproarishly funny and addictive). I'm still glad that I watched it though.
There were some really funny moments, especially with Becky's parents, even though those scenes were mainly contrived for the film.
