Review of Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002) by Derek T — 31 Aug 2008
Mind is a wild and crazy ride through the lives of game show creator Chuck Barris, who tells the story of how he was also an undercover CIA agent. The movie has the right pacing and sense of frenetic necessity, but it does not have the "killer instinct" of Kaufman's other works - that is, it doesn't go right over the top, save for Rockwell's impassioned insanity.
Kaufman has explored the mind more deftly in his other films, and Clooney has examined the state of the media more adeptly, but Mind is still a great film. It has a great sense of humour and some really sharp dialogue.
It's a must-see for fans of Rockwell, Kaufman, Clooney, and the Gong Show.
